Still Growing

While the garden layout is being planned and garlic is still sleeping, believe it or not, we still have some veggies growing in the garden. As last year's garden petered out, we planted some more carrots and parsnips to share a covered bed with the already established chard.

With the worst of our winter over (it barely came at all), we still have a little green going on under the row covers. Granted, the life under the cover is only a small amount of half-assed root veggies, but we should be able to harvest enough to soupify some of our bean crop. We also have some thyme, sage, and chard to throw in the pot, which should make for a hearty bowl of backyard goodness.

Yum! I've zone envy. We had freezing rain Friday, snow yesterday, snow today, snow and sleet predicted for tonight, snow showers tomorrow, and snow predicted for Friday. I'm sensing a pattern.

When you harvest and cook, please post in exquisite detail.

Ali, that's crazy. It was 70 degrees here today and there are no below-freezing temps in the forecast for a week. We've got some wicked storms on the way, though, and would be getting a ton of snow if it were cold enough. ...so much for winter.

We will certainly do some soup blogging when we finally get to cooking it!

It's always fascinating to see what is growing at the same time in different parts of the world and the country. Those little carrots are small, but they're awfully cute!

Hey Christina, I totally agree. I was just saying to Meg this morning that its really cool to see the different stages everyones starters are in.

By the way, I just found your blog(s) a few weeks ago and would like to say that I really dig the information you're putting out there. Thanks.

It's great that there's some green happening in your garden. What a welcome sight that must be.

Meg, if you'd like, I can try and explain how to cast off so you can finish off your scarves. It took me awhile before I got the hang of it.

We had a warm spell that melted all of the snow and I was surprised to to find the chard was getting ready to sprout and I still had parsley that was usable. Of course the weather is supposed to be foul and in the teens for the next week so I guess everything will get killed back. If it wasn't so windy here in the Winter I would have left the row covers up.

Hey Kate, that would be cool! Then I could make scarves for the chickens. Hmm...

Steven, the weather has been nuts here, too. We were able to easily dig up a bunch of carrots the other day, and the soil was only frozen lightly about an inch down. And that was before our 70 degree day! Good find on the parsley--fresh herbs in mid-winter are always a treat.

Interesting that your weather is milder than usual -we are in our 3rd bout of sub -10 lows which is pushing the envelope of our 5b zone status. Last year I was taking root cuttings in January leading me to believe we could harvest greens year round in our unheated hoop house. Guess I needed a longer survey on my weather research!

Great to see something green after our 20" snow last week. Its crazy to think I will be planting peas and spinach in a month or so!
