The goings on

We bought a house. Our back yard is smaller than our current garden, but the sun is far more agreeable. Due to the size of our yard, and subsequent gardening space (we intend to cover every inch), Meg and I are planning a little experiment. Actually the experiment isn't exactly little, nor is it really unique.

Our goal will be to go without supermarket produce for one year. Like I said, it's not unique; there are many people out there who live and eat this way, but we want to really focus on how those with little to no yard can buy their produce locally and seasonally all year round. In order to make this happen and not starve on in the winter months, this will involve a lot of canning, freezing, and dry storage.

On a side note:
I have not forgotten about the grace in small things challenge. However, the challenge hasn't been thinking of five kick ass things from our day, the real obstacle has been making time to post about them. I think we're at forty-something. What we'll do is make it to fifty and call it a day. The challenge did refocus the way we looked at things, but we're both pretty cheery and optimistic people to begin with, so...

Congratulations!!! What an exciting time. We are in the process of trying to close on a new property. I'm so pumped. I get to go from a very small city lot to about 6 acres!!! The possibilities are endless. Good luck with your challenge of no store produce. We're aiming for at least 50% of our food either home produced or from local farmers.

Congrats on the home purchase! I guess we won't be able to meet up with you again at Victory so casually though.

So is that a picture of your back yard? Do you have a front yard too? I look forward to seeing what you get up to in your new digs. And I suspect the no-grocery store challenge is one you'll be able to meet, especially if farmer's market purchases are allowed.

Fantastic! I'm sure ya'll will have a blast with your blank canvas of a back yard. My one question would be..is the parking spot something ya'll will be using? If not might be a spot for some raised beds resting on the pavement?

Hey everyone,
Thanks for the shouts. It goes without saying that Meg and I are very excited about this new adventure and we're equally jazzed to be sharing it with you.

To answer some of your questions:
We will be using the slab for parking purposes, there is no front yard, the pirate flag will always be a part of our gardening experience, and unfortunately our beloved chicken, Bertha, will not be joining us (city code).

That rocks, so glad you found a place with some garden space. Make sure you get a soil test that includes a lead test. I'm psyched for you!
