Game On!

The first tomato seeds sprouted yesterday. I don't know what it is, but there is something about tomatoes from the garden that makes it feel official. We're going to give twelve varieties a go this year. This is our first year growing yellow tomatoes and last night we were talking about how cool it's going to be making yellow sauce and soup.

The day our tomatoes came up, I was giddy.

Thanks for sharing that feeling of "spring is officially here...and I can't wait to eat a tomato!" that we all live for.

Or is that just me?

Oh man, I'm in full-blown jealousy!! What varieties are they (or did I miss a prior post about it?) Sorry, I"m a tomato nerd! :)

I agree, there's something special about the first tomato sprout, versus the first lettuce or cabbage or what-have-you.

Isn't it funny that we used to think they were poisonous. Thank goodness for whoever gave them a try and didn't die. :) Their name should be in history books.

In honor of your first tomato seedling this year, I'd like to share a little ditty my DH made up at dinner one night.
"Row, row, row your boat gently down the stream."
"Have yourself some Heinz ketchup, it's full of lycopene."

Katie,
You are no alone. This year's backyard salsa is going to be out of this world.

Robbyn,
We don't know what some of them are so the names aren't what we would call "scientific." I think we have a pretty good representation of colors, shapes, and sizes. I can't wait for the yellow ones; they were so incredibly sweet. Here's our list:

Brandywine
Grandpa's Mystery Big Tomato
Grandpa's Howard German
Amish Paste
Red Heart-Shaped
Matt's Wild
Black Tomato
Green Sausage
Small Green Tomato
Yellow Peach Tomato
Yellow Brandywine Tomato
Yellow Plum Tomato

Jenny,
I couldn't agree more. The only plants that compare to the excitement of a tomato are the hot peppers.

CeeCee,
Thanks for the tune. As a Pittsburgh native, I have a soft spot for all things Heinz.

It IS cool making yellow sauce! I have a few varieties started this year...only 4 so far, quite a change from my usual 15 or 20!

Amy,
We have four colors of tomatoes started this year. The culinary possibilities have us beside ourselves with excitement. I'll have to do some recipe research for sure.
