Top o' the Coop 6/14/08

The top of the chicken coop offers the best view of the garden, so every once in a while we take photos from up there. It's a good way to see what's going on.

Looking good. I only wish mine looked half as nice. It looks like you are inter cropping your corn and your spuds. Is that something you have tried before?

I'm so jealous of all that space.

Wonder what your chickens think when you are up on their roof? (grins)

Gorgeous!!! Do the chickens come up with you? And, ahem, where are the pictures of them?!

Rick, thanks! The corn and potatoes thing is new for us this year ... last year we did corn, beans, and squash. So far this year's setup is working well. We made pretty large hills for the corn and planted the potatoes in the valleys. Just before this photo we filled in the potato valleys with chopped straw and compost, and we'll probably top it all off with more compost in a few weeks.

The only issue we had was that the hills dried out pretty quickly until the corn was established, so we had to water it pretty often.

Christina, we are definitely lucky to have all the gardening space. Still, I wouldn't say no to more ...

Mrs. K, I think they got freaked out the first couple times I did it, but now they just wait around to see we're going to give them any kind of food.

Ben, good question. We have a chicken project in the works ... maybe this weekend? ... and I'll try to get some photos of the doing dumb chicken-y things.
