Some catching up to do

So the internet at the beach house was not all that it was cracked up to be. Every so often we could nab a signal from a neighboring home, but nothing steady enough to blog on. We got back last night and will probably spend the next few days getting things in order outside, inside, and on the blog. For those of you who have left comments these past few weeks, we apologize for the delayed replies. Look for a wave of responses soon.

There was some new and exciting news from the garden today. Our onions were ready for harvesting. In the past we have had terrible luck with onions, so this year we decided to start them from seed as opposed to sets and damn are we glad we did. Our harvest total was 34 onions at an impressive 15 pounds. The biggest one hefted in at about 1.25 pounds.

We have a second round of seeds germinated and hopefully we will have another harvest later on in the fall. Now that we have the confidence in starting from seed we will certainly double the crop size next year.

I'd love to see a detailed post on starting onions from seed. I have an unhealthy fear of it which I'd like to remedy!

Welcome back, by the way!

Hey nice crop. I personally have had great luck with the Alium family. Love to see how you started the seeds.

My attempts at growing onions have failed. They rotted. :(
Congrats on such a great harvest!

Those are some big healthy onions!
I'm imaging a big pan of grilled onions for my chicken fajitas! Yum!

Now what does this say about me! Everybody else is commenting on the onions, but i'm loving the drying method...that is one quality table...mine just get dumped on a wire rack in the shed, but i suppose it does the job!

Hey all,
We're still trying to catch up with things around here. For those of you interested in how we started our onions, click the "onion" link on our labels list. starting from seed really is the way to go. The pound and a half (680 grams) onion is larger than my fist.

Yay---onions!!! I love them and consider them a foolproof crop, but of course I cheat and use onion sets. And I'm with Vegmonkey on the greta table!
