A November Harvest

Pretty much all we're bringing in from the garden lately is lettuce and green beans. We do have the benefit of row covers, but a hoop house would be the shit. Lately all of our garden plans have to deal with the reality that we will be moving in less than a year. We had discussed the possibility of building a hoop like structure where we're at, but the resources would be better saved for property we actually own. I swear it feels like we're on cruise control.

Your greens look yummy, I just wanted to know is there a way to keep the leaf munchers off my lettuces without using chemicals.

I guess we didn't realize you were moving into your farm house so soon. We obviously have some more reading in your back posts to catch up. Can't wait to hear about your transition process. Best of luck!!

Hello Amanda,
Chemical use is always avoidable. Our garden has been attacked by everything (it just seems to be the nature of this property), but we have always found a way to naturally address the issue. What kind of pest is getting to your greens? If it is a flying insect, try floating row covers and if it is a deer, groundhog, rabbit, or any other warm blooded animal, build a more secure fence.

Hey Shibaguyz,
Our decision to move actually happened just recently. It will still be a process before all is said and done, but we're hoping to be on our way by the end of the Spring semester.

Dude, rejigger that chicken tractor with some plastic and you will have a mighty fine little hoop house. Really. Give it a try. Don't even bother trying to find greenhouse plastic, just clear plastic from a big-box store.

Go, Meg and Kelly, go!!! Have you been scoping out potential places yet? Keep us all appraised! Our fingers are crossed for the perfect place to move the chickens and raise the pirate flag. Meanwhile, yes, things probably do seem in limbo. But winter tends to have that effect on us all, anyway, so don't worry---soon spring and the new place will be here, with more to do that is even conceivable. Are your hens still laying? Ours haven't yet knocked off for the winter, for the first tiem ever. What are they thinking?!!

Im not sure what is eating them, I know it's not deer we don't get them ...in fact I've never seen one here. I would say that its a grasshopper or some think alike.
I have only just planted them maybe a week an a half, so they are still small, but you can see something munching on the leaves

Urgh, I know how you feel! Sucks when you really want to do some major work, but know you won't be there soon to reap the benefit.

Have you thought about making a temporary hoop house out of pvc piping? Drive short rebar stakes on either side of the bed and bend pvc pipe over the bed, slipping it over the rebar on either end. I'm with El, just use clear construction grade plastic and snap clamps to cover it all. Best of all, when you move you can take the whole thing apart and take it with you to the new place.
If you search craiglist you can usually find used pvc for cheap or free...
