Please Send Salad Dressing

Our Buttercrunch and Black Seeded Simpson lettuce is delicious, but it's not very heat tolerant. This past week of 100 degree weather came close to doing it in, so today we harvested everything that was getting ready to bolt. Now we have about six gallons of lettuce.

Needless to say, we'll be foisting this on everyone we see.

Mine is in the same condition, sob, because I was too sick/lazy/busy to set my shade cloth up. I did read something interesting the other day, though. Root pruning or transplanting of lettuces can prevent or slow bolting. I need to try that.

In the meantime, don't forget lettuce wraps (aka asian tacos!), or the Italian classic chopped lettuce with peas. And here's my recipe for homemade buttermilk dressing: http://yankeepantry.wordpress.com/2008/05/04/buttermilk-salad-dressing/

Ali :-)

if you still have some out, get some cheese cloth and cover the lettuce. Keep the cloth damp. These will slow the bolting and give you some more time. mmm...your greens look good though.

I'm in the same boat, except lazier so some of mine will be going to seed (but harvest time is this weekend). At least it keeps surprisingly long when you've picked it yourself.

the lettuce looks great----i wish i was as disciplined as you---i harvested some in my garden and let the rest go to seed. next planting i decided to go with the romaine---it works best for me in the california desert. check out the pictures, recipes and future recipes at www.mysisterdalesgarden.blogspot.com and www.mysisterdalesgarden.com

i will try to add you to my blogroll--wish me luck

I understand. Altho we didnt grow ours, out CSA share has been so generous in its offering of lettuces. We have concocted a really good red wine vinegar dressing. The kids even like it! Now you know you have a winner when they will gobble it up!

Yeah, I'm getting a might sick of letuce too. I'm always vaguely of happy to see it bolting around June 1.

all of our lettuce bolted too. fortunately our bunny likes it, even if it is a little bitter. love your blog - going to steal your netting idea for broccoli and cabbage.
