Seed Starting

There's a 7'x14'x6.5' space beneath our front porch (accessible from the basement) that will soon become our seed starting room.

As you can see in the photo below, the canvas is pretty blank. Last night I took a wire brush to the walls removing all the old, flaking sealer. Later today the plan is to give the room a fresh coat of white masonry paint.

If all goes to accordingly we will begin construction on the tables and light systems on Saturday. I believe that the plan is to do a two level table set up to maximize our space usage. Now that I think of it, we may also want to build them out like an island (as opposed to right against the wall) to increase the amount of air circulation. Hmm, I'll have to get Meg's thoughts on that one.

Needless to say we are very excited for the opportunity to plant our garden on time this year and really get the most out of our little backyard plot.

Personally, that looks like a good beer and wine storage space, too. Y'know: get all your hobbies in one space!

good luck on the seed-starting season...

I'm thinking root cellar/seed starting. The two ends of the spectrum in one location. So when you do build shelves, think highly adjustable. I saw some in an old Rodale book that used dowels to make shelf height adjustment; I always thought it would be handy.

Yay, seed starting!

a really good way to save space with seed starting is to use shelves. i bought some last year and got cheap shop lights which i hung on chains so i could raise and lower them. i think there are pics of them from last march or april on my blog.

I am envious and, more importantly, inspired to create my own seed starting place in our basement. the idea had been a nebulous thought, but it helps to see what you are doing for it. Thanks.
